Happy September everybody! Here's a scary reminder that there's only three months left of 2025. I know it's cliché to say the years been flying in, but it really has. Speaking of the year, I thought it would be nice to shine a little light on new indie pop which has been releasing lately. 2025 has been a great year for indie pop, paticularly twee, with it seeing a bit of a revival. That's why I've decided to create a series of articles for this blog, titled PopWatch. These articles will showcase some newly released music for you to enjoy. To kick things of, I'll be showing you an up-and-coming band from the States called The Sourdrops. Enjoy :) *** The Sourdrops, from Orlando in Florida, formed in late 2023. They have a long list of influences, including the typical twee giants such as Talulah Gosh and Beat Happening, but also the entire nation of Scotland and telephones. I think they started out as a five-peice but know it seems to be just the four of them. In 2024 the Sourdrops put out two releases in the form of a promotional demo in April and their bitesized debut album in Novemember. It had been a bit quiet since then, until on the 29th of August when the group finally released their follow up tape Just Throw It In! on Ragdoll Records. This release is undoubtedly and acheivment for the band, as this would mark their first release on a label (Ragdoll Records also being very new, founded in Janurary). One thing I like about the Sourdrops is that you can really tell the musicians were having fun making their music, and this is very much apparent with this tape. I don't think Just Throw It In! will be winning any awards or changing any lives, but there will always be an irresisitable charm to hearing something made with heart and soul just for the fun of it. I also liked how, on this tape, the group showed a bit of their own unique flavour. I mean they definetly still are inspired by the bands mentioned earlier, but its far from a simple imitation. I liked their use of unique instruments, in paticular the warbling recorder at the end of "Vassar Girl". In fact the entire ending of Vassar Girl is a great hodgepodge of unique instruments. Also, I just have to mention that the opening track, "Saw a Shadow", sounds a lot like a noiser cousin of "Many Suns" by Peatmos. I'd never thought I'd be comparing noise pop to folk pop but here we are. If you've got just 9 minutes to spare, give Just Throw It In! a spin. It costs just $6 (£4.48) to buy the cassette from Ragdoll Records. Be quick though, it's limited to 25 copies! Just Throw It In!
